Is It Ever Too Late for Second Chances?

PALOMA at the Hudson Backstage Examines a Mother?s Attempt to Go Home Again

Three Latinas are combining creative forces to produce Paloma, a play with music, opening at the Hudson Backstage Theatre November 7. Playwright Lina Gallegos, actress/producer Yolanda Romersa, and director Vetza bring their dramatic and musical talents to this play about an urban Los Angeles Latino family trying to overcome a hurtful past, and, through love, learning to accept and forgive.

Paloma deserted her husband and two children nine years ago to return to the wild party life of drugs and alcohol. Her husband, Enrique, is trying unsuccessfully to move on. Then, on the day of her daughter Isabel?s 12th birthday, Paloma returns, disrupting everything. Running throughout the play are 10 original songs, ranging from traditional Mexican styles to blues to hip hop. A Troubadour also sings a narrative song, (corrido) through the show. "This is the music we have grown up with and made our own", says producer Romersa, who also contributes the music on some of the songs.

Others are a collaborative musical effort by Romersa, Mark Tabbert, William House, Rayna Romersa and Richard Hernandez. Gallegos penned all lyrics.

Playwright Lina Gallegos?s previous produced works include Maggie?s Madness, Yellow Tulips and Damn Joe. When her drama Paloma opens November 7, she will have the distinction of having two premieres running in Hollywood simultaneously, as it joins the production of her piece "Is It Hot in Here or Is It Me?", opening at the Egyptian Arena Theatre October 24. She is also a stage, film and television actress.

Producer Yolanda Romersa is a professional actress, singer and voiceover artist, who has recorded extensively in both English and Spanish. She toured Russia as Mary Magdalene in a KGB Production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Director Vetza has worked as an actor and director in regional theatre from San Francisco to New York, in venues such as South Coast Repertory, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Teatro Campesino and the Bilingual Foundation for the Arts. She is also an accomplished jazz musician with 15 CDs to her credit.

Award-winning designer Matthew Scarpino is designing the Paloma set.
